Безусловно, ошибкой сценария стало стремление «обелить» немецкого ученого: фашисты превратно используют технологию, изобретенную им для лечения психологически травмированных солдат с русского фронта; он убеждал их в том, что война закончилась, и тем самым возвращал им спокойствие. Симпатия, которую вызывает к себе герой Рода Тейлора, ослабляет ужас перед этой «вежливой пыткой» американского офицера. Фильм интересен прежде всего этим весьма характерным тяготением к парафантастической спекуляции, которая в 60-е гг. стала встречаться в американском кинематографе все чаще и принимать все более сложные формы, пока не привела к мощному прорыву фантастики в 2 последующие десятилетия.
